There are questions as to why Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is suspending various Ukrainian political parties, just as he did Viktor Medvedchuk.

As reported last week, Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and his cabinet have suspended 11 political groups in the country on suspicion of having links to Russia.

Most of the sanctioned parties were little, and several were completely irrelevant

Many of those in Ukraine consider these parties to be “pro-Russian.” However, it is critical to comprehend what “pro-Russian” entails in today’s political crisis.

The suspension of the parties does, in fact, show a pattern from the past. The administration has been imposing penalties on mainstream media as well as certain opposition members on a regular basis since last year, despite presenting the country with any solid evidence of a violation.

Viktor Medvedchuk, who is a close confidant of Putin, for instance, was sanctioned by the government just after polls indicated that their party seemed to have more support from the public than “People’s Servant”, which is Zelenskyy’s party and he feared that in a future election,

it may defeat him.

It all started when Medvedchuk met Vladimir Putin for the first time in 2003. At that time Medvedchuk was the Head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine. His youngest daughter, Darya admires Putin, and then in 2004, he actually became her godfather.

Not only does his daughter want this but Medvedchuk claims that this was also his wife, TV host Oksana Marchenko’s, request, he further claimed that she had begged him to convince Putin to agree.

Medvedchuk said in 2018 with the Independent that he utilized his friendship with Putin just to facilitate prisoner exchange during the Donbas War. He also indicated that, unlike Putin, he considers Ukraine and Russia to be two distinct countries.

He thinks “Russia-Ukraine are Slavic nations, with intertwined histories, religion

I tell him this all the time. I don’t think it’s one nation. You simply can’t say this.” Medvedchuk also said in the 2018 interview that he and Putin “often” addressed Ukraine.

Once Russian author and journalist Mikhail Zygar said in his 2015 book All the Kremlin’s Men stated Putin thought that no issue concerning Ukraine could be resolved without Medvedchuk, As a result, it may be concluded that their bond is unique.

Viktor Medvedchuk will be released from house imprisonment in February 2022, according to Ukrainian interior ministry adviser Anton Gerashchenko, however, Medvedchuk’s lawyer quickly refuted the claim.

He has been under house arrest since May 2021, when the government charged him with treason. In Crimea, a territory of Ukraine that Russia invaded in 2014, he has been accused of treason and conspiring to loot state resources in Crimea.

Medvedchuk’s counsel claimed that Medvedchuk was obliged to relocate owing to threats from nationalist organizations, which he had reported to the police. Medvedchuk was also sanctioned by the US in 2014 for damaging Ukraine’s democracy.

Viktor Volodymyrovych Medvedchuk was a lawyer by profession and business tycoon from Ukraine. He became a politician in 1997 when became a member of the Ukrainian parliament. He served there till 2002.

Medvedchuk was the former Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma’s chief of staff from 2002 until 2005

He stayed out of national politics after then till 2018, then he rejoined. He also served as the People’s Deputy of Ukraine on August 29, 2019.

Currently, he is the head of Ukrainian Choice, a pro-Russian political party that opposes Ukraine’s membership in the European Union and its also his party’s stance.
